A Barrington police investigation led to the arrest of an East Providence man who allegedly robbed the Citizens Bank branch at 965 County Road earlier this month.

On Wednesday, April 7, at about 4 p.m., officers from the Barrington Police Department boarded a RIPTA (Rhode Island Public Transit Authority) bus on County Road and arrested Aaron M. Lapointe, 31, of 803 Willett Ave., East Providence.

According to local police, Mr. Lapointe, entered the Citizens Bank branch at 965 County Road (near the Barrington-East Providence town line) a little after 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 2, and handed one of the tellers a note demanding money.

Following the incident, police scoured the area looking for Mr. Lapointe, who was known to the tellers in the bank, but could not find him. The investigation continued until Thursday, when police learned that Mr. Lapointe was traveling on a RIPTA bus heading south on Route 114.

Officers began following the bus on County Road and then ordered the bus over to the side of the street. Police boarded the bus and took Mr. Lapointe into custody without incident.

Police said Mr. Lapointe was not armed and was carrying $250, including a crisp new $100 bill tucked into the waistband of his pants. Police said Mr. Lapointe made off with an undetermined amount of cash during the alleged bank robbery.
