Barrington police and fire officials were called at about 4:45 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 23, for a possible brush fire in the area of Legion Way.
Crews responded to the scene and eventually located a 61-year-old East Providence man who had set up camp in the woods behind the Legion Way pumping station. The smoke earlier spotted by a passer-by was from a campfire the man had built.
The East Providence man told police he had been living in the woods for the last two months and had recently constructed a brick fire pit to keep warm as the temperatures dropped.
Police told the man he could not camp out on the town-owned property.
