The following report is compiled from the Bristol Police Department call log for the week of Sept. 3 – 8, 2013:
Tuesday, Sept. 3
Animal control officers were called to a State Street home to remove a large snake left in the home by a previous tenant.
A State Street caller reported the theft of a washer and dryer.
A caller reported hearing voices coming from the bushes at Independence Park shortly before 10 p.m., concerned that someone might be sleeping in them. Police responded and dispersed the person.
Wednesday, Sept. 4
A Westood Road resident reported that a 12-year-old was stalking her 7-year-old daughter.
A Mulberry Road resident reported three suspicious-looking males on bicycles in the area.
Thursday, Sept. 5
Police were called to a car accident at the intersection of Franklin Street and Metacom Avenue at 12:22 a.m. Upon arrival, police saw the driver, Elaine Dickervitz, 46, of Barrington, trying to get out of her car, which had flipped on the driver’s side after hitting a telephone pole. While trying to help her, officers detected alcohol on her breath and administered a field sobriety test, which she failed. She was arrested on charges of DUI-first offense, and failure to submit to a chemical test.
A Jameson Drive resident reported that someone had cut down trees on his property. Officers told him they were cut down to provide for a stop sign and that the branches would be picked up.
Police were called to a home on Narrows Road to settle a dispute between neighbors over lawn cutting.
While on patrol on High Street, officers noticed a parked car with three males in it. Ten minutes later, the car was still there and officers asked the men why they were parked near a school. They allegedly told officers that they were waiting for a friend who lived nearby. Officers ran background checks on the men, and determined that one of them, Shawn J. Vargas, 23, of 21 Magnolia St., Bristol, had a bench warrant out for his arrest. He was taken into custody.
Animal control was called to an area of Wood Street for a reported pit bull trying to attack someone’s cat.
RIPTA called Bristol police to report that several Roger Williams University students were standing in front of the bus, not allowing it to move on. Officers investigated and determined that the bus was overcrowded and some students were asked to wait for the next bus.
While conducting ID checks at Mt. Hope Liquors, police discovered that Jonathan Collins, 27, of Providence, had a bench warrant out for his arrest for failure to appear in court for a suspended license summons. He was taken into custody.
Friday, Sept. 6
An Oliver Street resident wanted to speak to police about a ladder on his property.
Police were called to an area of Perry Street for a report of juveniles fighting.
Police investigated a complaint of road rage in and area of Wood and State streets, which was determined to be a misunderstanding.
Police were called to an Oliver Street home for a report of an assault in progress. Upon arrival, officers knocked on the door to the second floor apartment, which was opened by a female. She told officers she was OK, but that her husband, James McGowan, 33, of 9 West St., Bristol, had showed up yelling at her. The two friends she was with took off out of fear, later offering a statement to police. McGowan was later arrested on charges of violating a restraining order.
A 9-1-1 call was made, later determined to be accidental. A homeowner was showing his wife how to use a new phone.
Saturday, Sept. 7
Police arrested Austin Rosenthal, 21, of New York, on an affidavit warrant charge of possessing a schedule 1 – 4 drug, and a bench warrant for failure to appear.
A Court Street resident reported a possible college party in the area at 12:40 a.m. Police determined that it was a homeowner out with a couple of friends, who were then advised of the noise ordinance.
A Bradford Street caller reported that a male was sleeping on a fence. Bristol Rescue was dispatched because the male was intoxicated.
Police advised a Wood Street caller that the brush left in his yard would be picked up Monday by the DPW.
Police arrested Ardy Jagne, 27, of 43 Prospect St., Bristol, on charges of obtaining money under false pretenses. A Fall River woman reported to police on Aug. 19 that Mr. Jagne had allegedly scammed her out of $8,000. She told police that she met Mr. Jagne at a florist shop in Fall River, who overheard her talking about needing a car. She told police that Mr. Jagne said he was in the businesses of buying cars at auction and could help her. The two kept in touch and Mr. Jagne eventually found a car for the woman, for $19,150. He allegedly told her he needed $3,000 transferred into his account to get the car, adding weeks later that he needed about $5,000 more to have it delivered, which she complied. When he did not deliver, she filed a report to get her $8,000 back.
Sunday, Sept. 8
A Ruth Avenue resident reported a college party, and had witnessed a car coming and going, dropping off more party-goers.
Police responded to a home on Fox Hill Avenue for an accidental 9-1-1 call. A child had been playing with the phone.
A caller crossing Mt. Hope Bridge at 9:10 p.m. reported seeing a male walking across the bridge, possibly intoxicated. Police responded to the scene and transported the male, who was walking because he had a suspended license and was not intoxicated.
Police were called to a Hope Street home for a reported domestic disturbance. Officers spoke with both parties, Jennifer Gomes, 27, and Robert Irving Cairrao Jr., 31, both of 1013 Hope St.. Ms. Gomes told police that her boyfriend, Mr. Cairrao, had grabbed her by the arm and pulled her hair the day before. On that night, she told police he had allegedly whacked a phone out of her hand. Neighbors nearby reported hearing yelling, but didn’t witness an attack. Ms. Gomes’ injuries were photographed, and consistent with her story. Mr. Cairro was arrested on charges of domestic assault. Ms. Gomes was also taken into custody because there was an active bench warrant for her arrest for failure to appear in court for a suspended license summons.
