EAST PROVIDENCE — A pedestrian was killed on Interstate 195 in the wee hours of Sunday morning, Sept. 15, according to the Rhode Island State Police.
State Police responded to numerous 911 calls for a pedestrian being struck by a motor vehicle on I-195 East, just prior to the Taunton Avenue exit.
The investigation revealed that the pedestrian was struck by a single motor vehicle while walking in the left travel lane on the Washington Bridge, approximately 1,100 feet west of the Taunton Avenue exit, at 3:57 a.m.
Witnesses stated that they observed a pedestrian wearing dark colored clothing walking in the left lane of travel just prior to being struck. The operator of the vehicle attempted to avoid the collision, but was unable to do so.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene by the Rhode Island Medical examiner’s office. The identity of the pedestrian has not been released, pending notification to family members. The State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is also assisting in this investigation.
