It appeared that slippery roads may have played a role in the collision of a Toyota mini-van and a GMC Yukon in the area of Johannis Farm on Sowams Road. Police shut down a section of Sowams Road from New Meadow Road to near Sowams School.
Traffic was rerouted while rescue personnel removed the drivers from their vehicles — workers pulled both doors from the driver’s side of the Yukon. The injured motorists were transported to area hospitals. The extent of their injuries was not yet known. While police and fire crews were on scene at the head-on crash, at least two other accidents occurred nearby. Two cars were involved in a fender-bender near the intersection of Sowams Road and Kent Street, and a patrolman stationed on Sowams near Barneyville Road said a car was involved in a smaller crash just a few feet from where he was posted.
Officials at the scene of the head-on crash said roads across Barrington were slippery on Wednesday morning — the result of a quick-moving snowstorm. They also said state road crews had not yet treated some of the road surfaces in town.
