PORTSMOUTH — Here are the highlights from the Portsmouth police log from over the past week.
Monday, March 31
Police received a report from the town’s Department of Public Works of illegal dumping at the Weaver Cove boat ramp. Police said they found discarded wood and tires in the parking lot, but there were no identifying marks on the garbage to help them identify a suspect.
Tuesday, April 1
Douglas B. Freitas, 43, of 313 North Corry St., Fall River, was arrested around 4:15 p.m. on a bench warrant issued by Second District Court. Police stopped Mr. Freitas’ vehicle in the parking lot of the Portsmouth Water and Fire District on East Main Road because he was not wearing a seat belt, according to police.
Wednesday, April 2
Ian J. Haas, 24, of 344 McCorrie Lane, Portsmouth, was charged with driving while intoxicated (first offense), after allegedly running a red light at the intersection of East Main Road and Turnpike Avenue shortly before 2 a.m.
Robert D. Medeiros, 31, of 16 Hughes St., Fall River, was charged around 7 p.m. on a bench warrant issued from Second District Court. A patrol officer with knowledge of the warrant stopped Mr. Medeiros’ car on Route 24 northbound near Sprague Street, police said.
Thursday, April 3
Matthew T. Gant, 27, of 14 Riverview Ave., Tiverton, was charged with possession of schedule I,II,III,IV,V; and driving while intoxicated (second offense). Police stopped the vehicle Mr. Gant was driving for speeding on East Main Road at about 1:30 a.m.
Saturday, April 5
Michael D. Iavarone, 20, of 3 Drawbridge Drive, West Warwick, was charged with violating a no-contact order. Police made the arrest shortly after midnight while responding to Roger Williams University’s Baypoint Inn & Conference Center on Anthony Road for a report that Mr. Iavarone was there to see his girlfriend. A no-contact order was issued after an earlier domestic incident between the two, police said.
Richard J. Heller, 49, of 234 Union St., was charged with domestic assault after police responded to his home around 6:30 p.m. for a report of a domestic disturbance.
Sunday, April 6
Jorge A. Schoen-Cruz, 35, of 576 Park Ave., was arrested after allegedly stealing more than $400 in cash from the Island Tap bar shortly before 8 p.m. An employee at the bar told police she had stepped out to have a cigarette and when she returned observed Mr. Schoen-Cruz reaching over the bar, grabbing the “money bag” before running out the front door. After getting a description of Mr. Schoen-Cruz, police arrested him at his home located next door to the bar. The bag of money, containing $415, was later recovered and returned to the bar, police said.
