PORTSMOUTH — Here are some highlights from the Portsmouth police log from over the past week.
Wednesday, April 16
Police conducted a search warrant on a home at 179 Hilltop Drive around 11:25 a.m. in regards to the possible illegal growth of marijuana there. Police said they seized 22 marijuana plants; nine, 4-ounce jars of marijuana; assorted marijuana stems in a plastic container; as well as several guns. Police arrested one of the home’s occupants, Jake D. Fernandez, 23, when he failed to produce a valid Rhode Island medical marijuana card. He was charged with possession of marijuana, a misdemeanor.
Thursday, April 17
Laura E. Johnston, 40, of 23 Slate Lane, was charged at about 5 p.m. on a bench warrant issued by Second District Court
Vehicles driven by Judy A. Mason of Portsmouth and Jean B. Sanders of Portsmouth collided on East Main Road at Linden Lane around 5:15 p.m. Ms. Mason was taken to the hospital with injuries and both vehicles sustained substantial damage and were towed from the scene.
Friday, April 18
Garrett B. Stone, 72, of 479 Wolcott Lane, Middletown, was charged shortly before 5:30 p.m. with shoplifting at Clements’ Marketplace and possession of schedule I, II, III, IV, V. Witnesses told police that Mr. Stone had gotten a newspaper, filled a small container of soup and then sat in the dining area at about 4 p.m. About 20 minutes later he went to the sandwich bar, ordered a sandwich and grabbed another newspaper, police said. A worker at the sandwich bar told police Mr. Stone asked for a stamp on his loyalty card — the 10th sandwich is free — and then accused her of not doing so. (The loyalty cards must be presented to a cashier at checkout, police were told.) Mr. Stone ate the sandwich, read the newspaper and tried to leave the store before an employee asked him to return, according to police. During a search of Mr. Stone’s personal property following his arrest, police said they found several different medications for which he could not produce a prescription.
Sunday, April 20
A sick raccoon found on the front lawn of a Richard Drive home was euthanized by a police officer shortly after 10 a.m.
Vehicles driven by Melissa A. Matias of East Providence and Johanna L. Kilroy of Newport collided on West Main Road at Mill Lane at about 3 p.m. All three passengers in the Matias vehicle complained of pain and were taken to Newport Hospital by rescue workers.
Edmilson A. Pereira, 33, of 74 Willow Lane, was charged with second-degree child abuse at about 8 p.m. Police said that the previous month, Mr. Pereira had slapped a young girl several times, causing her mouth to bleed. A warrant was put out for the arrest of Mr. Pereira, who was charged at his home.
Monday, April 21
A three-vehicle collision took place on West Main Road at Hedly Street shortly before 5 p.m. The drivers were Zachary A. Boyle of Jamestown, Jennifer Alves of Portsmouth and Robert H. Monro of Riverside. Ms. Alves and passengers in her vehicle were taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
Dwight Brown, 43, of 328 Second Ave., Apt. 3, Woonsocket, was arrested around 5:40 p.m. on a bench warrant issued by Sixth District Court. Mr. Brown was arrested after a King Phillip Street resident complained of a man soliciting in the area without a valid permit.
