PORTSMOUTH — Here are some highlights from the Portsmouth police log from over the past week.
Wednesday, May 21
Steven B. Cox, 55, of 19 Chapel Terrace, Apt. 514, Newport, was arrested on a bench warrant issued by Second District Court. Police made the arrest after responding to the Cumberland Farms in the south end of town at about 8:10 p.m. for a report of a man — later identified as Mr. Cox — loitering in the store. Police said there was an active warrant for Mr. Cox’s arrest for failure to appear in court to answer earlier charges. Mr. Cox, who said he was on his way to a barbecue, had a large amount of uncooked meat in his possession, police said. Mr. Cox requested that the meat be disposed of or donated to a shelter. Police chose to dispose of the meat because it had been un-frigerated for an unknown amount of time.
Jodi L. Kelley, 42, of 28 Peck St., Swansea, was charged with driving while intoxicated (first offense) shortly after midnight. Police made the arrest after responding to Town Hall to assist a motorist. Ms. Kelley said she was driving south on West Main Road when he vehicle struck a curb, causing two passenger-side tires to go flat. She and a passenger were outside the vehicle waiting for a tow, police said. Ms. Kelley failed a field sobriety test on the scene, according to police.
A car driven by Gerard Decotis of Newport hit a deer that had run onto West Main Road near the Middletown line at about 1 a.m. The collision caused extensive, disabling front-end damage to the car, police said. The deer was alive but appeared to have four broken legs, police said, so an officer euthanized the animal using his service weapon. The R.I. Department of Environmental Management was notified.
Police responded to West Main Road at Union Street shortly before 5 p.m. for a report of a vehicle struck by an object that shattered the windshield and damaged its roof, sun visor and sunroof glass. Police later found a large leaf spring in the northbound lanes of West Main Road.
Friday, May 23
A vehicle driven by Keith Nadeau of North Smithfield hit a dog at a low rate of speed as he was traveling south on West Main Road near Donna Drive. The dog, a gold Labrador retriever that appeared to be uninjured, had escaped from being leashed in a nearby yard, police said. The collision knocked the vehicle’s fog lamp out of place, according to police.
Saturday, May 24
Angelo N. Gutierrez, 26, of 214 Russell Drive, Tiverton, was charged with driving while intoxicated at about 2 a.m. Police pulled Mr. Gutierrez’s car over for speeding on West Main Road at Russo Road.
Sunday, May 25
Joseph W. Morse, 48, of 48 Founders Ave., was charged with driving while intoxicated at 10:25 p.m. Police said the vehicle, which was being operated erratically, was stopped in the area of Echo Lane and Birchwood Avenue.
Vehicles driven by Andrea Bush and Kristin Walker, both of Portsmouth, collided on Pine Street at Cottage Avenue at about 12:10 p.m. Ms. Bush injured her right ankle and was transported by Portsmouth firefighters to Newport Hospital along with her three daughters, who were passengers in the car. (None of the children seemed to be injured, police said, although the oldest girl said her head “felt a little fuzzy.”) Ms. Walker complained of pain to her foot and head and was transported to Newport Hospital by the Tiverton Fire Department, which provided mutual aid. Ms. Walker was issued a summons for operating a motor vehicle without evidence of insurance and failure to maintain proper control of a motor vehicle.
Monday, May 26
James R. Danenberg, 32, of 47 Hargraves Drive, was arrested on a bench warrant issued by Second District Court. Police went to Mr. Danenberg’s home shortly after 4 p.m. to make the arrest.
Tuesday, May 27
John L. Belmore, 52, of 231 Jepson Lane, was charged with domestic assault following an incident at his home shortly after midnight.
