Three young men — 17, 19, and 20 years old — pushed their luck early in the morning on Tuesday, July 22, by trying to break into a few too many cars in the side streets off the north end of Main Road in Tiverton.
A resident called police at 1:03 a.m. to say he’d seen the suspects with flashlights looking into cars along Haskins Avenue. Police dispatched an unmarked car with tinted windows and an officer inside, who parked down the street and observed the suspects as they examined cars.
After calling for backup, the officer emerged from his car and, after a short pursuit, police were able to apprehend the three men.
One of them, whose name was not released because he is a minor,  is 17 years old and from Warren. The other two are Devin O’Loughlin, 19, of East Providence, and Kyle Patrick Simons, 20, of Swansea.
Tiverton Police Department Detective Jason Dunlea said the three men, all with backpacks, had 49 items taken from cars.
Detective Dunlea said they were “mostly looking for unlocked cars.”
He said that around15 cars along Haskins, Hayden, and Bismark Avenues, and Hambly and Main Roads, were rummaged through. Only six cars had things taken from them.
All three men were charged with six counts of larceny under $1,500, and with six counts of injuring or tampering with vehicles.  Mr. O’Loughlin and Mr. Simons were also charged with resisting arrest.
Det. Dunlea said there have been reports all summer about car breaks in the East Bay, in Barrington, Tiverton, Little Compton, Westport and Fall River — “a few dozen,” he said.
“We catch one group and another group starts up,” he said. “These guys are looking for open vehicles and taking what they can.”
