PORTSMOUTH — Here are some highlights from the police log from over the past week.
Thursday, Sept. 12
Ariel A. Pena, 19, of 143 Third St., Apt. 4F, Newport, was charged with illegal possession of controlled substance. Police made the arrest after stopping Mr. Pena’s car around 7:30 p.m. on West Main Road near Melville School for having illegal tint on its windows. Police found two small bags of marijuana as well as 15 small yellow pills — identified as Clonazepam — wrapped in tin foil in the center console. Police said Mr. Pena did not have a prescription for the drug.
Friday, Sept. 13
Anh T. Han and Anh P. Hoang, both 21 and residents of Apt. 806 at Bay View Estates, 2121 West Main Road, were each charged with domestic assault/battery after police received a report around 12:30 a.m. of the pair fighting in a hallway. Both of them sustained minor injuries, police said.
Chrystal J. Coyne, 32, of 56 Point View Drive, Tiverton, was charged with possession of schedule IV drugs and driving with a suspended license shortly after 5 p.m. Police stopped the pickup truck she was driving on Route 24 northbound at Cedar Island because it was following another vehicle too closely. Police said they found four Clonazepam pills for which Ms. Coyne did not have a prescription.
Saturday, Sept. 14
Michelle C. Given, 25, of 64 Perry St., Bristol, was charged with domestic assault around 2 a.m. after police were dispatched two hours earlier to a weigh station on Route 24 southbound for a report of an assault inside the vehicle. When they arrived they found Ms. Given’s boyfriend, who said she had punched and slapped him in the arms and face, leaving a small cut on the bridge of his nose. Ms. Given then hitchhiked home to Bristol, where she was later arrested, police said.
A limousine came loose from a tow truck around 2:40 p.m. and rolled onto its side, blocking all travel lanes on East Main Road, police said. When police arrived they found a Hummer limousine, about 30 to 35 feet long and weighing 8,600 pounds, in the roadway near Trinity Cemetery. The driver of the tow truck told police he was traveling north when the wheels of the vehicle mounted the curbing and the limousine spun. Police said they suspected that the tow truck was overloaded, as its wheel lift bar was broken off completely.
Shannon R. Jezak, 23, of 771 Broadway, Fall River, was charged with driving while intoxicated (first offense) and refusing to stop after causing damage to a vehicle, at about 6:30 p.m. Police responded to West Main Road near Stringham Road for a report of a hit-and-run accident. Police stopped Ms. Jezak’s car near Turkey Hill after getting a description of the vehicle from the victim.
Monday, Sept. 16
Justin L. Viau, 43, of 3 Bush St., Newport, was arrested on multiple charges after his vehicle was stopped for speeding on East Main Road near Union Street around 1:35 a.m. Police detected an “extreme” odor of alcohol coming from his breath, but Mr. Viau refused to cooperate, saying he had diplomatic immunity and did not have to follow Rhode Island laws, according to police. Mr. Viau handed police two cards; one stated “Universal Postal Office Diplomat” and the other read “International Diplomatic Driver Permit.” Both were from the “Postmaster General Divine Province,” which police said appeared to be a religious-based organization. Mr Viau refused to step out of the vehicle and tried to resist when police removed him, according to police. Later he refused to tell police where he lived, then physically threatened an officer, police said. He was charged with driving while intoxicated (second offense), threatening public officials, resisting arrest, obstructing police in the execution of their duties, reckless driving/drag racing/eluding police and refusal to submit to a chemical test.
