Two men found wandering in the woods at Veterans’ Park in Barrington earlier this month are attracting more and more attention from area police.

At about 2:30 a.m. on April 3, a Barrington police officer was patrolling the woods behind Veterans’ Park when he came upon an unoccupied car. He looked inside the car and saw luggage, and then saw two men emerge from the woods. The officer questioned the men; the two were wearing black hooded sweatshirts and black pants, and told the officer that they had been recording sounds near the pond.

Unable to locate anything incriminating, the officer allowed the men to leave. About a week later, a Devonshire Drive resident — the Devonshire neighborhood abuts the Veterans’ Park woods — told police someone had tried to break into his home.

Last week, Barrington Police Chief John LaCross said the two men found in the woods could be connected to the alleged crime, and this week he said that another police department in the area is also investigating those individuals.

“Another police department had similar concerns about them. Someone had seen them out in the middle of the night,” Chief LaCross said. “They eluded police in the other town.”

Chief LaCross said his department knows the identity of the two men and may revisit their possible connection to the Devonshire attempted break-in.

Police are also looking for information about a white Volvo with New York license plates that was seen in the area of a Barrington break-in last month. Detectives are also searching for a man who may be connected to a Wood Avenue break-in; a surveillance camera captured the man’s image shortly before he allegedly broke into a home near a County Road restaurant.
