Barrington Police Chief John LaCross is asking residents to clear their sidewalks of snow following a storm.

A local ordinance states that all those people owning property that has a sidewalk must clear the walkway of snow no later than 6 p.m. the day after snow has stopped falling.

Residents must also clear snow around any fire hydrant that is located on their property.

Failure to comply with the ordinance can result in a $50 fine.

Chief LaCross said officers would be out checking to see if sidewalks were cleared. He said police have a list of those people who are exempt from the ordinance because they are physically incapable of clearing the snow and cannot afford to pay for snow removal services.

“The Town of Barrington holds a National AAA record of 54 years without a pedestrian fatality and I would like to thank the hard work of our residents and the DPW during this snow storm and last week’s major storm to clear their sidewalks and make them safe for passage,” said Chief LaCross.

“However, there are still some homes in town and some businesses along Maple Avenue that need to adhere to the town ordinance.”
