PORTSMOUTH — If you see a tall, slim cat with large ears prowling around, you might want to give a call to police.

“There’s a Savannah cat running loose around town that I need to catch,” said Ariel Fisher, Portsmouth’s animal control officer.

A cross between a domestic cat and the serval — a medium-sized, large-eared wild African cat — Savannahs are much larger than a normal domestic cat, weighing about 30 pounds.

On Tuesday, Officer Fisher received a call from the Rhode Island state veterinarian in regards to a Savannah cat seen in the area of 582 Wapping Road, near Greenvale Vineyards.

The cat appears to be friendly and domesticated, witnesses have told Officer Fisher.

Nevertheless, she said, a permit is still required to own a Savannah and there are none yet registered in Rhode Island.

If you think you’ve seen the cat, call Officer Fisher at 401/643-0136.
