PORTSMOUTH — Here are some highlights from the Portsmouth police log from over the past week.
April 28
John N. Cubellis of Prudence Island told police that several items had been stolen from his unlocked shed on Alice Avenue the day before. The pilfered items included several commercial-grade power tools and electrical cords. He placed the items in the shed on April 19 and noticed they were missing on April 26.
April 29
A 17-year-old boy was arrested around 7:30 p.m. after allegedly throwing rocks at vehicles in the area of Boyd’s Lane and Anthony Road. Police arrived to find the juvenile running across Boyd’s Lane. Once in handcuffs, he was combative and stated several times, “Kill me” and “I want to die,” according to police. The boy was charged with throwing articles at moving vehicles. Police said the boy suffers from mental health issues.
Wednesday, April 30
A vehicle driven by Kristen Plourde of Tiverton was sideswiped around 4:30 p.m. on East Main Road near Vanderbilt Lane by a white SUV that proceeded north without stopping, police said. Ms. Plourde was uninjured but her car sustained damage to its driver’s side rear tire and body. Police were unable to locate the SUV.
Friday, May 2
A Subaru Forester driven by Barbara A. Peckham of Portsmouth hit the front structural wall of Rite Aid Pharmacy, 3034 East Main Road, around 3:20 p.m. Ms. Peckham told police she pressed the gas pedal instead of the brakes as she went to secure the vehicle in “park.” Ms. Peckham refused medical treatment. Her vehicle’s front end was partially embedded into the wall of the building, police said.
Monday, May 5
A love triangle was apparently behind the arrests of a man and a woman charged with assaulting an adult female, police said. Police responded to the residence across from New China Restaurant on East Main Road for a report of a woman being assaulted. When they arrived, police found a distraught woman who said she had just been beaten up by “two men.” (A witness told police a man and a woman had committed the alleged assault.) The woman appeared confused and had fresh bruising on her face and minor cuts to her hands, police said. She said the two suspects fled into a home at 3286 East Main Road. Police went to the home and knocked, but no one answered and the door was locked. Due to the violent nature of the incident, police said, they kicked in the door and drew their weapons, ordering a male and female to the ground. They were identified as Gregory S. Mathias, 27, of 3286 East Main Road, and Cheryl M. Ferreira, 37, of 250 Mt. Hope Ave., Apt. 2, Fall River. Mr. Mathias told police that the alleged victim was his ex-girlfriend and that they’d broken up “a long time” ago. He also said she had broken into the home earlier. According to police, however, he kept changing his story, first saying they’d broken up two weeks earlier, and then to “within the week,” before telling police the woman had a key to the house. Police said they believed Mr. Mathias was trying to withhold information in front of Ms. Ferreira, who told police, the the woman had entered the residence without consent and attacked her. The victim, meanwhile, said she and Mr. Mathias were still dating, and when she went to the home — using a key he had given her, she told police — Mr. Mathias and “some chick” opened the door and immediately began assaulting her, according to police. Police said Mr. Mathias also took the alleged victim’s iPhone away from her. At some point during investigation, Mr. Mathias complained of chest pains and was transported to Newport Hospital for treatment. Upon his release, he was transported back to police and charged with domestic assault, domestic disorderly conduct and larceny of under $1,500. Ms. Ferreira was charged with simple assault.
